Frequently Asked Questions – Buying & Selling Antiques

1. What types of items do you buy and sell?

We specialise in antiques, collectibles and works of art including furniture, decorative arts, silver, jewellery, ceramics, paintings and curiosities. You are welcome to contact us with photos if you are unsure whether an item is suitable.

2. How do I sell my antiques through you?

You can start by emailing clear photographs, approximate dimensions and any known history of the item or collection. We will review the information, advise whether it is suitable for consignment, and then discuss next steps such as valuation, cataloguing and marketing.

3. Do you offer home visits to assess a collection?

Yes, for substantial collections or estates we can arrange a site visit by appointment. During the visit we can provide preliminary advice, identify key pieces and outline a strategy for cataloguing, valuation and sale.

4. How does consignment work?

On consignment, you retain ownership while we market and sell the items on your behalf. We agree reserve prices or guiding estimates, handle photography, cataloguing and promotion, and deduct our commission from the final sale proceeds once the item is sold.

5. What commission do you charge for selling items?

Commission is calculated as a percentage of the final sale price. The rate depends on the value and category of the item or collection and will be clearly agreed with you in writing before proceeding.

6. Is there a fee if my items don’t sell?

In some cases, we charge a cataloguing or “kill” fee to cover the cost of professional cataloguing and photography if a project does not proceed to sale. This will always be disclosed in advance in your agreement.

7. How do you determine the value of an item?

Valuations are based on current market conditions, comparable sales, condition, rarity, provenance and demand. For significant works, we may also consult external specialists or published references.

8. Can you provide valuations for insurance or probate?

Yes. We prepare formal written valuations for insurance, probate, family division and other purposes. The scope and fee will depend on the size and complexity of the collection.

9. How can I be sure my item is authentic?

We apply our specialist experience, reference materials and market knowledge to assess items. Where necessary, we may recommend further research or consultation with external experts before offering a piece for sale.

10. How long does it take to sell an item?

Timeframes vary depending on demand, seasonality and the chosen selling platform. Some pieces sell quickly; others require more targeted marketing to reach the right buyer. We will discuss realistic expectations with you at the outset.

11. How and when do I get paid after a sale?

Once a buyer has paid in full and the return period (if any) has passed, we process your settlement, deducting agreed commissions and fees. Payment is made by bank transfer within an agreed timeframe.

12. Do you buy items outright as well as on consignment?

In some cases we may offer to purchase items directly. This is usually suitable for pieces where pricing and demand are clear. Whether we recommend purchase or consignment will depend on the item and your preferences.

13. I’ve inherited a mixed collection – where do I start?

Begin by leaving everything together and documenting what you have with photographs and basic notes. Then contact us to discuss a viewing or send an initial selection of images so we can guide you on priorities, potential value and next steps.

14. Can you help with shipping and logistics?

Yes, we can assist with organising packing, transport and, where necessary, export documentation through trusted logistics partners. Costs will be quoted based on size, value and destination.

15. How should I care for my antiques before sale?

Avoid aggressive cleaning, polishing or repairs, as these can reduce value. Keep items in a stable, dry environment and handle them as little as possible. If conservation or restoration may be beneficial, we can advise on suitable specialists.
